IB Overview

  • Wooster High School and Vaughn Middle School

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) provides a continuum of education, consisting of four programmes that are united by the IB’s philosophy and approaches to learning and teaching. In order to teach any of the four IB programmes, schools must be authorized. Every school authorized to offer IB programmes is known as an IB World School. In order to retain IB authorization, IB schools must be re-accredited every five (5) years. Teachers are trained by the IB and are knowledgeable of the curriculum and assessment requirements set out in the IB subject guides.

Wooster High School and Vaughn Middle School are the only authorized IB World Schools in Northern Nevada. Washoe County School District covers the annual participation fee for IB schools, some teacher training, textbook, and mailing fees. Individual students pay yearly examination fees. On a year-to-year basis, the State of Nevada covers some registration and testing fees for those students who qualify for free/reduced lunch. We are also provided funding for teacher professional development, textbooks, and testing fees from grants, as well as the hard work and dedication of our parent Booster organization.

Wooster High school is an authorized IB World School for the following three programmes of the IB continuum:

IB programmes aim to do more than other curricula by developing inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who are motivated to succeed. We strive to develop students who will build a better world through intercultural understanding and respect. The IB’s programmes are different from other curricula because they:

    • encourage students of all ages to think critically and challenge assumptions
    • are developed independently of government and national systems, incorporating quality practice from research and our global community of schools
    • encourage students of all ages to consider both local and global contexts
    • develop multilingual students.
